Rulings for the Cards on This Page
explain how a card works in tricky situations. They come from Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic.RulingThe official answer to how a card works in a tricky situation. Most rulings are written by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic, and a few are notes from Scryfall, the card database Magic players use. A ruling explains a card. It does not change what the card says.Open the full glossary
35 rulings for 11 cards
Accumulated Knowledge
Because Accumulated Knowledge is still on the stack as you perform its instructions, it isn't in your graveyard and won't add to the number of cards drawn.
Brainstorm
You draw three cards and put two cards back all while Brainstorm is resolving. Nothing can happen between the two, and no player may choose to take actions.
Control Magic
Gaining control of a creature doesn't cause you to gain control of any Auras or Equipment attached to it.
Crystal Spray
It only changes what is printed on the card (or set on a token when it was created or set by a copy effect). It will not change any effects that are on the permanent.
You can’t change proper nouns (i.e. card names) such as “Island Fish Jasconius”.
You choose the words to change on resolution.
It can’t change a word to the same word. It must be a different word.
If you change the text of a spell which is to become a permanent, the permanent will retain the text change until the effect wears off.
Alters all occurrences of the chosen word in the text box and the type line of the given card.
Can target a card with no appropriate words on it, or even one with no words at all.
Changing the text of a spell will not allow you to change the targets of the spell because the targets were chosen when the spell was cast. The text change will (probably) cause it to be countered since the targets will be illegal.
It can be used to change a land’s type from one basic land type to another. For example, Forest can be changed to Island so it produces blue mana. It doesn’t change the name of any permanent.
Day's Undoing
If any abilities trigger while players are shuffling cards into their library or drawing seven cards, those abilities cease to exist when the turn ends. They won’t be put on the stack.
Ending the turn this way means the following things happen in order: 1) All spells and abilities on the stack are exiled. This includes spells and abilities that can’t be countered. 2) If there are any attacking and blocking creatures, they’re removed from combat. 3) State-based actions are checked. No player gets priority, and no triggered abilities are put onto the stack. 4) The current phase and/or step ends. The game skips straight to the cleanup step. 5) The cleanup step happens in its entirety.
Though other spells and abilities that are exiled won’t get a chance to resolve, they don’t count as being countered.
If any triggered abilities do trigger during the process of ending the turn, they’re put onto the stack during the cleanup step. If this happens, players will have a chance to cast spells and activate abilities, then there will be another cleanup step before the turn ends.
Any “at the beginning of the next end step” triggered abilities won’t get the chance to trigger that turn because the end step is skipped. Those abilities will trigger at the beginning of the end step of the next turn. The same is true of abilities that trigger at the beginning of other phases or steps.
If both your hand and graveyard are empty as Day’s Undoing starts resolving, you’ll still shuffle your library before drawing seven cards.
Haunted Fengraf
Because Haunted Fengraf's ability doesn't target any creature card, any creature card put into the graveyard in response to that ability may be returned to your hand.
The creature card returned to your hand is chosen at random as the ability resolves. If any player responds to the ability, that player won't yet know what card will be returned.
All players get to see which card you return to your hand.
Magical Hack
It only changes what is printed on the card (or set on a token when it was created or set by a copy effect). It will not change any effects that are on the permanent.
You can’t change proper nouns (i.e. card names) such as “Island Fish Jasconius”.
You choose the words to change on resolution.
It can’t change a word to the same word. It must be a different word.
If you change the text of a spell which is to become a permanent, the permanent will retain the text change until the effect wears off.

It can be used to change a land’s type from one basic land type to another. For example, Forest can be changed to Island so it produces blue mana. It doesn’t change the name of any permanent.
Memory Lapse
Memory Lapse has a self-replacement effect that replaces the spell going to the graveyard before any other effect can replace that event. If the spell was cast using flashback, however, flashback will change the spell's destination from its owner's library to exile.
Mystic Sanctuary
If another effect puts these lands onto the battlefield tapped, they enter tapped, even if you control enough lands with the appropriate basic land type.
As these lands are entering the battlefield, they check for lands that are already on the battlefield. They won't see lands that are entering the battlefield at the same time (due to Scapeshift, for example).
Telling Time
If there are fewer than three cards in your library, follow the instructions in the order given for any cards that are there.
Unsubstantiate
If a spell is returned to its owner's hand, it's removed from the stack and thus will not resolve. The spell isn't countered; it just no longer exists. This works against a spell that can't be countered.
Also Printed in Other Drops
Some of these cards came in other Secret Lair drops too, each with its own art.
