Rulings for the Cards on This Page
explain how a card works in tricky situations. They come from Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic.RulingThe official answer to how a card works in a tricky situation. Most rulings are written by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic, and a few are notes from Scryfall, the card database Magic players use. A ruling explains a card. Arcane Signet
If your commander is a card that has no colors in its color identity, Arcane Signet's ability produces no mana. It doesn't produce {C}.
If you have two commanders, the ability adds one mana of any color in their combined color identities.
If you don't have a commander, Arcane Signet's ability produces no mana.
Command Tower
If you have two commanders, the ability adds one mana of any color in their combined color identities.
If you don't have a commander, Command Tower's ability produces no mana.
If your commander is a card that has no colors in its color identity, Command Tower's ability produces no mana. It doesn't produce {C}.
Crop Rotation
You can’t cast Crop Rotation without sacrificing a land, and you can’t sacrifice additional lands.
Dawn's Truce
Some instant or sorcery spells require alternative or additional targets if the gift was promised. You ignore these targeting requirements if the gifts aren't promised for those spells. On the other hand, you can promise a gift for a permanent spell even if you won't be able to choose targets for an enters ability of that permanent once the spell resolves.
In the main set, there are four different kinds of gifts. "Gift a Food" causes the chosen opponent to create a Food token, while "Gift a Treasure" causes the chosen opponent to create a Treasure token. "Gift a card" causes them to draw a card, and "Gift a tapped Fish" causes them to create a tapped 1/1 blue Fish creature token. The Commander decks contain two more kinds of gifts: "Gift an Octopus," which causes the chosen opponent to create an 8/8 blue Octopus creature token, and "Gift an extra turn," which causes them to take an extra turn after the current turn ends.
If a spell for which the gift was promised is countered, doesn't resolve (perhaps because all of its targets are illegal), or is otherwise removed from the stack, the gift won't be given. None of its other effects will happen either.
For permanent spells with gift, an ability triggers when that permanent enters if the gift was promised. When that ability resolves, the gift is given to the appropriate opponent.
You can't pay a gift cost more than once.
For instants and sorceries with gift, the gift is given to the appropriate opponent as part of the resolution of the spell. This happens before any of the spell's other effects would take place.
If you copy a spell for which the gift was promised, the gift was also promised to the same opponent for the copy. If a card or token enters as a copy of a permanent that's already on the battlefield, the gift isn't promised for that new permanent, even if it was promised for the original.
As an additional cost to cast a spell with gift, you can promise the listed gift to an opponent. That opponent is chosen as part of that additional cost. The gift isn't given at this time; rather, it's given at a later time based on whether or not the spell is a permanent spell.
Homeward Path
The owner of a token is the player under whose control the token was put onto the battlefield.
The owner of a card is the player who started the game with that card in their deck.
Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis
Starting with you and proceeding in turn order, each player chooses a land card from their hand or chooses not to choose one, but doesn’t reveal any chosen lands yet. Once all players have made this choice, all chosen lands are revealed and enter the battlefield simultaneously.
If the card you draw is a land card, you may choose it to put onto the battlefield.
Rites of Flourishing
The triggered ability is put onto the stack after you have already drawn your card for the turn.
Sword of Forge and Frontier
You must follow all normal timing rules for a card you play using Sword of Forge and Frontier's second ability and, if it's a spell, you must pay its costs to cast it.
The effect that allows you to play an additional land that turn is cumulative with other effects that do so, including itself. If the second ability triggers multiple times in the same turn, perhaps because there were multiple combats, you will be able to play that many additional lands.
If the equipped creature somehow deals combat damage to a player on an opponent's turn, the second ability will trigger. You'll be able to cast cards you exile if timing rules allow (so, instants, mostly), but you won't be able to play a land that turn.
Swords to Plowshares
Use the power of the creature from when it was last on the battlefield to determine how much life is gained.
Wedding Ring
The trigger conditions of Wedding Ring's second and third abilities care about opponents who control any artifact named Wedding Ring, not just the token copy created by its first ability.
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth isn't a Forest while it's not on the battlefield.
Yavimaya's ability causes each land on the battlefield to have the land type Forest. Any land that's a Forest has the ability "{T}: Add {G}." Nothing else changes about those lands, including their names, other subtypes, and whether they're legendary, basic, or snow.
Land cards not on the battlefield aren't Forests while Yavimaya is on the battlefield.
