Never played Commander? Start here.

Commander is a way of playing Magic: The Gathering with a deck of exactly 100 cards. One of them is your commander — a legendary creature that leads the deck. It starts in a place of its own called the command zone instead of inside your deck, so it is always there when you want it, and if it dies you can put it back and play it again. The other 99 cards all have to be different from one another. Only basic lands may repeat.

Your commander decides what the rest of the deck is allowed to contain. Magic has five colours — white, blue, black, red and green — and a card may only go in your deck if every colour on it is a colour your commander already has. Pick a green-and-white commander and the other 99 cards must be green, white, or have no colour at all. That one decision does most of the deck building for you.

A game is usually three or four people playing at one table at the same time, each starting on 40 life instead of the usual 20. Games run long, everybody talks, and the deck that has an actual plan is generally the one still standing at the end.

What this site does

Start with a list, or with nothing

Paste a decklist from anywhere and it becomes a working deck straight away. If you have no list yet, Session Zero asks a few plain questions about the way you like to play and hands back commanders that suit the answers.

Find out what your deck really does

Every deck is read card by card: what it is trying to do, whether your lands can actually pay for your spells, which cards break the rules of the format, and which of the five brackets it plays like — so a table can agree on a game before anyone shuffles.

Look up the things nobody explains

Every card is labelled with what it does on its own, and those labels are grouped into the plans they build: 48 archetypes, 131 themes and 195 tags, each written out in plain words, plus a glossary for the jargon.

The commanders people are playing most

Counted from decks built over the last two years. All 3,453 legal commanders are listed on the commanders page.

Or start somewhere else

  • Commanders — all 3,453 of them, A to Z.
  • Preconstructed decks — 169 ready-made decks you can buy and play out of the box, with every card in each one listed.
  • Archetypes — 48 whole game plans, described by the way the deck intends to win.
  • Themes — 131 things a deck can be built around, like a creature type or a single idea the cards share.
  • Tags — 195 single things one card can do, on its own. These are the pieces archetypes are made of.
  • Brackets — the five power levels, and how to tell which one your deck belongs in.
  • Glossary — every word the game uses without defining it.
