The Store Price Against Buying the Cards One at a Time
The single-card total is each card's price at TCGplayer on , in US dollars. A total only shows when every card in the drop has a price.
Rulings for the Cards on This Page
explain how a card works in tricky situations. They come from Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic.RulingThe official answer to how a card works in a tricky situation. Most rulings are written by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Magic, and a few are notes from Scryfall, the card database Magic players use. A ruling explains a card. It does not change what the card says.Open the full glossary
77 rulings for 27 cards
Archaeomancer
If an instant or sorcery spell puts Archaeomancer onto the battlefield, its ability can target that card in your graveyard.
Bloom Tender
Bloom Tender can't produce colorless mana, even if you control a colorless permanent.
Lands are normally colorless permanents, even if they tap for mana of a certain color.
The colors are white, blue, black, red, and green. Colorless is not a color.
For each color (white, blue, black, red, and green), check to see if you control a permanent of that color. You can count the same permanent for multiple colors. For example, if you control a green enchantment and a white-black creature, Bloom Tender's ability produces {W}{B}{G}.
Bloom Tender won't produce more than one mana of any particular color. At most, it will produce {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}.
Burgeoning
Playing a land will trigger it, but putting a land onto the battlefield as part of an effect will not.
Demonic Consultation
You don't name a card until Demonic Consultation resolves.
If you don't reveal the named card (perhaps because it was in the top six cards of your library), you'll end up exiling your entire library. You don't lose the game at that point, but will lose the next time you're instructed to draw a card.
There is no way to make this card affect your opponent. It affects "you", and "you" means the controller of the spell. It has no targets.
You must name a card that actually exists in the game of Magic.
Doomsday
If your graveyard and library combined contain five or more cards, you must choose five cards from among them. You can't choose to find fewer than that.
If your graveyard and library combined contain fewer than five cards, all of those cards will wind up in your library.
Dragonskull Summit
This checks for lands you control with the land type Swamp or Mountain, not for lands named Swamp or Mountain. The lands it checks for don't have to be basic lands. For example, if you control Stomping Ground (a nonbasic land with the land types Mountain and Forest), Dragonskull Summit will enter untapped.
As this is entering, it checks for lands that are already on the battlefield. It won't see lands that are entering at the same time (due to Warp World, for example).
Drowned Catacomb
This checks for lands you control with the land type Island or Swamp, not for lands named Island or Swamp. The lands it checks for don't have to be basic lands. For example, if you control Blood Crypt (a nonbasic land with the land types Swamp and Mountain), Drowned Catacomb will enter untapped.
As this is entering, it checks for lands that are already on the battlefield. It won't see lands that are entering at the same time (due to Warp World, for example).
Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
Dryad of the Ilysian Grove’s first ability is cumulative if you control more than one. It’s also cumulative with other effects that let you play additional lands, such as the one from Escape to the Wilds.
Each land you control will have the land types Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. They’ll also have the mana ability of each basic land type (for example, Forests have “{T}: Add {G}.”). They’ll still have their other subtypes and abilities.
Giving a land additional basic land types doesn’t change its name or whether it’s legendary or basic.
Eidolon of the Great Revel
The mana value of a spell with {X} in its mana cost includes the value chosen for X.
The amount of mana spent to cast a spell doesn't change its mana value. For example, a card cast with its morph ability has a mana value of 0 even though {3} was paid.
Casting Eidolon of the Great Revel doesn't cause its own ability to trigger. It must be on the battlefield when the spell is cast for its ability to trigger.
Elvish Spirit Guide
If a spell or ability's cost includes returning a creature to your hand and paying mana, you can't activate Elvish Spirit Guide's mana ability after returning it to your hand. This is because mana abilities must be activated before you begin paying costs.
Glacial Fortress
This checks for lands you control with the land type Plains or Island, not for lands named Plains or Island. The lands it checks for don't have to be basic lands. For example, if you control Watery Grave (a nonbasic land with the land types Island and Swamp), Glacial Fortress will enter untapped.
As this is entering, it checks for lands that are already on the battlefield. It won't see lands that are entering at the same time (due to Warp World, for example).
Hokori, Dust Drinker
If there are two Hokori on the battlefield (for example, if Mirror Gallery is on the battlefield), each player untaps two lands they control at the beginning of their upkeep.
Mesa Enchantress
If the enchantment spell is countered, Mesa Enchantress's ability still resolves and causes you to draw a card.
Enchantments put onto the battlefield without being cast won't cause Mesa Enchantress's ability to trigger.
Mesa Enchantress's ability will resolve before the spell that caused it to trigger.
Metallic Mimic
Even though Metallic Mimic is a Shapeshifter, other Shapeshifter creatures you control won't get a +1/+1 counter unless you chose Shapeshifter as Metallic Mimic entered the battlefield. If you do, that creature must be entering the battlefield as a Shapeshifter to get a +1/+1 counter. It won't get a +1/+1 counter if it enters the battlefield as a copy of a non-Shapeshifter creature.
The choice of creature type is made as Metallic Mimic enters the battlefield. Players can't respond to this choice. Metallic Mimic's second ability starts applying immediately.
You must choose an existing creature type. "Artifact" and "Vehicle" aren't creature types.
Creatures of the chosen type that enter the battlefield at the same time as Metallic Mimic won't enter with an additional +1/+1 counter.
Mystic Remora
Cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability that imposes an increasing cost on a permanent. "Cumulative upkeep [cost]" means "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent is on the battlefield, put an age counter on this permanent. Then you may pay [cost] for each age counter on it. If you don't, sacrifice it."
Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it's not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can't be made. For example, if Mystic Remora has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay {4} or sacrifice it.
Phyrexian Metamorph
If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is a Clone), then your Phyrexian Metamorph enters as whatever the chosen creature copied, except it's also an artifact.
Any "enters" abilities of the copied permanent will trigger when Phyrexian Metamorph enters. Any "as [this] enters" or "[this] enters with" abilities of the chosen permanent will also work.
Except for also being an artifact, Phyrexian Metamorph copies exactly what was printed on the original permanent and nothing more (unless that creature is itself copying something or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that permanent is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any noncopy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, and so on.
If the chosen permanent is a token, Phyrexian Metamorph copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put the token onto the battlefield, except it's also an artifact. Phyrexian Metamorph is not a token.
If Phyrexian Metamorph somehow enters at the same time as another permanent (due to Mass Polymorph or Liliana Vess's third ability, for example), Phyrexian Metamorph can't become a copy of that permanent. You may choose only a permanent that's already on the battlefield.
If the chosen permanent has {X} in its mana cost (such as Protean Hydra), X is considered to be zero.
You can choose not to copy anything. In that case, Phyrexian Metamorph simply enters as a 0/0 artifact creature and is put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action (unless something else is raising its toughness).
If Phyrexian Metamorph copies a noncreature artifact, it is no longer a creature.
Plaguecrafter
Plaguecrafter can be the creature its controller sacrifices for its own ability.
As Plaguecrafter's ability resolves, first the player whose turn it is chooses a creature or planeswalker they control, then each other player in turn order does the same, knowing the choices made before them. Then all the chosen permanents are sacrificed at the same time. Next, each player in the same order who couldn't sacrifice a permanent chooses a card in hand without revealing it, then the chosen cards are discarded at the same time.
Each player chooses a permanent to sacrifice from among the creatures and planeswalkers they control. You don't choose which type of permanent any other player has to sacrifice.
Rapid Hybridization
If Rapid Hybridization resolves and the creature isn't destroyed (perhaps because it has indestructible), its controller will still get the Frog Lizard token.
If the creature is an illegal target when Rapid Hybridization tries to resolve, it won't resolve and none of its effects will happen. No Frog Lizard token will be created.
Retreat to Coralhelm
A landfall ability triggers whenever a land you control enters for any reason. It triggers whenever you play a land, as well as whenever a spell or ability puts a land onto the battlefield under your control.
Whenever a land you control enters, each landfall ability of the permanents you control will trigger. You can put them on the stack in any order. The last ability you put on the stack will be the first one to resolve (As a result, you can have those abilities resolve in the order of your choosing.).
A landfall ability doesn't trigger if a permanent already on the battlefield becomes a land.
Rootbound Crag
This checks for lands you control with the land type Mountain or Forest, not for lands named Mountain or Forest. The lands it checks for don't have to be basic lands. For example, if you control Temple Garden (a nonbasic land with the land types Forest and Plains), Rootbound Crag will enter untapped.
As this is entering, it checks for lands that are already on the battlefield. It won't see lands that are entering at the same time (due to Warp World, for example).
Serra Ascendant
In a Two-Headed Giant game, anything that cares about your life total checks your team’s life total. Serra Ascendant gets +5/+5 and has flying as long as your team has 30 or more life.
If Serra Ascendant is dealt damage at the same time that you gain life (most likely because it dealt combat damage to a creature blocking or blocked by it), and your life total becomes 30 or greater, apply its last effect before considering whether or not the damage dealt to it is lethal.
Soul-Scar Mage
If a spell or ability an opponent controls causes a source you control to deal noncombat damage to a creature an opponent controls, that damage will be replaced with -1/-1 counters.
If an effect causes a creature you control to fight a creature an opponent controls, the damage is dealt simultaneously. For instance, if your 2/2 creature fights an opponent’s 4/4 creature, your creature will be dealt 4 damage and your opponent’s creature will have two -1/-1 counters put on it.
If multiple prevention and/or replacement effects are trying to apply to the same damage, the controller of the creature that would be dealt damage chooses the order in which to apply them. As examples, an opponent could choose to apply the effect of Djeru’s Resolve and prevent the damage rather than put -1/-1 counters on it; or an opponent could choose to convert the damage to -1/-1 counters before Insult could double it, and then Insult’s effect won’t apply anymore.
Soul-Scar Mage’s effect isn’t a prevention effect. Damage that can’t be prevented will be replaced with -1/-1 counters.
Spell Queller
If Spell Queller leaves the battlefield before its “enters” ability resolves, its leaves-the-battlefield triggered ability triggers, resolves, and does nothing. Then its first triggered ability resolves and exiles the spell forever.
If the exiled card’s owner casts it, the spell has no relation to the spell that player originally cast. Any choices made for the original spell or effects affecting the original spell aren’t carried over to the new one.
If the player casts the exiled card, they do so as part of the resolution of Spell Queller’s last ability. The player can’t wait to cast it later in the turn. Timing permissions based on the card’s type are ignored, but other restrictions (such as “Cast [this card] only during combat”) are not.
Spells that can’t be countered can be exiled by Spell Queller’s ability. They won’t resolve.
If a player casts a card “without paying its mana cost,” they can’t choose to cast it for any alternative costs, such as emerge costs. The player can, however, pay additional costs, such as escalate costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, those must be paid to cast the card.
If the card has {X} in its mana cost, the player must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
For spells with {X} in their mana costs, use the value chosen for X to determine if the spell’s mana value is 4 or less.
Sunpetal Grove
This checks for lands you control with the land type Forest or Plains, not for lands named Forest or Plains. The lands it checks for don't have to be basic lands. For example, if you control Hallowed Fountain (a nonbasic land with the land types Plains and Island), Sunpetal Grove will enter untapped.
As this is entering, it checks for lands that are already on the battlefield. It won't see lands that are entering at the same time (due to Warp World, for example).
Tezzeret the Seeker
The effect from the ability overwrites other effects that set power and/or toughness if and only if those effects existed before the ability resolved. It will not overwrite effects that modify power or toughness (whether from a static ability, counters, or a resolved spell or ability), nor will it overwrite effects that set power and toughness which come into existence after the ability resolves. Effects that switch the creature’s power and toughness are always applied after any other power or toughness changing effects, including this one, regardless of the order in which they are created.
A noncreature permanent that turns into a creature is subject to the “summoning sickness” rule: It can only attack, and its {T} abilities can only be activated, if its controller has continuously controlled that permanent since the beginning of their most recent turn.
For the second ability, you choose the value of X when you activate it. You don’t look through your library until the ability resolves. (In other words, you can’t look through your library, decide what artifact card you want, and then determine what X is.) You can’t choose an X that’s greater than the number of loyalty counters on Tezzeret.
The first ability can target zero, one, or two artifacts. You may activate it with no targets just to put a loyalty counter on Tezzeret.
The third ability affects all artifacts you control, including artifacts that are already creatures.
The third ability causes artifacts you control to become creatures in addition to their other card types.
Thoughtseize
You lose 2 life even if the target player has no nonland cards in their hand to discard.
Winds of Change
Each player draws a number of cards equal to the number of cards they shuffled into their own library.
